(Tentative) List of Speakers for the
2018 Riverside County History Symposium
1. Hiking Through History: The Pacific Crest Trail in Riverside County - Phil Brigandi
About a hundred miles of the Pacific Crest Trail passes through Riverside County on its way from Mexico to Canada. The trail, first proposed in the 1930s, has grown more and more popular in recent years. Phil Brigandi, who has hiked much of the southern end of the trail, will discuss its history and the historic places and place names it passes on its way through our county.
Phil Brigandi has been researching and writing local history since 1975, and hiking the hills of Southern California even longer than that. He is the author of nearly two dozen books on the history of Orange, Riverside, and San Diego counties. He formerly served as Pageant Historian for the historic Ramona Pageant in Hemet.
2. The History of the Riverside International Raceway - Pete Lyons
3. Newly-Discovered Archaeology of the Eastern Riverside County Desert - George Kline
4. Vercoe, Mining Man: From London to Riverside, All In Vein - Don Chaput
Don Chaput is Curator Emeritus of the Natural History Museum in Los Angeles. His mining research, field work, and publications include such locales as California, Arizona, Mexico, The Philippines, Canada, Fiji, England, and Australia. His most recent work is Empire of Sand (2015), involving gold mining along the Colorado River. His research often deals with high finance (fraud, speculation, and other shady deals).
5. Should We Create a Riverside County? [Historical debate]
